Good point Nimrod – the D300 shutter isn’t exactly quiet either. That can be a problem in an especially quiet situation, but in NYC with the traffic that’s rarely an issue. However, it’s the shutter combined with perhaps me aiming the DSLR right at him that would really stand out.
So, to avoid all this, I shot this guy from the hip. By strategically placing the focus point and shooting on full manual exposure with a bit of trial and error I was able to pull it off.

Nice candid series.. but it seems like you were very close. Didn’t he notice you? At least on my D50 the shutter/mirror noise is very noticable.
